Heath Ryan Wins Sydney Three Day Event

Heath Ryan and Mystery Whisper have taken out the three star class of this year’s Sydney Three Day event at SIEC.

The pair had led after the dressage and cross country phases. However, the showjumping phase proved to be a nail biter as there were no clear rounds and Heath, who had two rails up his sleeve coming in as the last competitor, had two rails down, including the first!

Thankfully, Heath had no time penalties, so he secured a narrow win (0.5 penalties) over New Zealand’s John Twomey and Flaunt it. Megan Jones and Kirby Park Allofasudden managed to move up the rankings as rails fell in the class, and her four penalties-round secured third place.

The crowd was later wowed by the competitors in the compulsory CCI four star “confirmation of fitness” class for our WEG team, including the likes of Stuart Tinney, Megan Jones and Chris Burton, who made the four star showjumping course look very easy. As this class was a test of fitness, there was no official scoring.

Well done to Heath and best of luck to our WEG team hopefuls. The team will be more formalised in the next few days.

In other eventing news, Megan Jones finished second in the final standings of the HSBC FEI World Cup Eventing, earning her US$34,000. Michael Jung from Germany was the overall winner and former Aussie, Phillip Dutton placed third.

Congratulations to Megan on an outstanding result!

Come to the Sydney International Three Day Event 26-29 August 2010

Ten years ago Sydney hosted the Olympic Games and the Sydney International Equestrian Centre was created. The Australian Eventing team won gold in front of  massive crowds at the Sydney Games, our fourth gold in the same event over the history of the Olympics. Since then Australia has added a Silver to their total of seven Olympic equestrian medals.

Despite being one of the best Eventing nations in the world Australian events struggle to attract serious sponsorship and media coverage.  Events such as the Sydney International Three Day run on a shoestring budget and rely heavily on volunteers dedicated to providing world class  competitions for Australian riders aiming to qualify for International events.

In an attempt to raise the profile of the sport in the eyes of the Australian public the Sydney International Eventing Committee, supported by Equestrian Australia and Equestrian NSW, funded the production of both the 2009 events for screening on television. Aired by Fox Sports these highlight packages attracted large audiences from around Australia. Despite this interest in Equestrian sport with the Australian public and an increase in Australian successes in other equestrian disciplines sponsorship and media support of national and international equestrian events is still disappointing and organisers have not been able to continue with the TV production for this year’s event.

Running two major events per year is stretching the Sydney volunteer committee to their limit but they are determined to ensure the future of this amazing sport in NSW. It is exciting to watch and demonstrates the amazing bond that can be developed between horse and rider. Age is no barrier and men and women compete on an equal footing, one of the few sports where this is possible.

Horse enthusiasts are encouraged to come to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre this week to relive the thrill of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. By attending the event spectators will be showing their support and may help to attract media coverage and a major sponsor for 2011.

Will Chris And Leilani Get Selected?

Rachel Smith 19 August 2010

In just eight days time Chris Burton from Wilburforce, NSW will attempt to repeat his performance from the 2010 Sydney round of the HSBC World Cup where he snatched victory from Megan Jones on the stunning chestnut mare HP Leilani. Despite being one of the country’s most decorated riders Chris has not yet represented Australia in a World Equestrian Games or an Olympics. His recent form is hard for selectors to ignore and they will be watching him closely during the test of fitness class at the Sydney Three Day Event being held from 26 -29 August.

HP Leilani is owned by Jade Findaly. Originally from Mosman Jade was given the ride on Leilani about 6 years ago. When she realised this was a special horse Jade and her mother Jean bought the horse. Jade rode, trained and competed Leilani until the Sydney 3DE in September 2008 when she was 19 weeks pregnant with her first child Piper and knew she had to give up riding until after the birth.

Chris and Jade had been friends and riding together since they both started competing in Sydney at about the time of the 2000 Olympics. They developed a great respect for each other and when Chris had misfortune with his horse Newsprint, Jade wanted to give him the ride on her beautiful mare that was just ready to hit the big time. She respected his riding ability and he respected her knowledge and training of Leilani. Chris has gone on to take Leilani to the top with guidance and cooperation from Jade all the way and they hope she will be selected to travel to Kentucky with the Australian Eventing team this September.

burtonccimg_5795

Jade’s mother Jean, who still lives in Mosman has offered support and helps finance the expensive and challenging endeavour. “Preparing a horse for world class competition is a long process.  My pleasure is derived from seeing a beautiful creature reach her potential and enjoying watching the riders create such a beautiful spectacle. I have encouraged Jade to follow her dream by supporting her chosen career.”

Jade was brought up in Mosman as a typical city girl however she always had a love of animals and especially horses. She now has a lovely farm at Cattai near the Hawkesbury River. The farm has a charming 1806 cottage in which she and her husband Paul Trickett run their businesses. Paul runs Willow Landscapes, Jade runs Findlay Equestrian and together they run Tyre Feed Bins Australia. Their farm is Heritage listed and they try to maintain their businesses sympathetically to its origins.

As well as watching the talented Leilani compete in the WEG test event with Chris, Jade will be competing three horses at the event. Frontier Psychiatrist is entered in the Tarraleah Park CCI2*, Bloomers Twinkletoes is in the Harbour IT CCI1* and the divine Oaks Sporthorse mare Cordellia is entered in the Gwaihir Stud Young Event Horse Class.

9 Days To Go ‘Til Riders Compete Across The Country On The Spectacular Olympic Course

Rachel Smith 18 August 2010

In just nine days time the best riders from around Australia will compete on the world renowned Sydney 2000 Olympic course at the Sydney International Three Day Event. Nearly 200 riders will participate over four days of competition. Saturday is cross country day and the course is looking as good as it did ten years ago when the Australian Eventing Team won Olympic gold in front of huge crowds.

International cross country course designer Ewan Kellet arrived on site at the beginning of August and has been working non stop to complete the upgrades to the Sydney track with only a fleeting visit home to Victoria to visit his wife and baby. The 2010 course includes a number of new portable jumps and sponsor fences.

Landscaping company Green Options has provided the decorative colour for the course and the Sydney International Equestrian Centre contributed to the event with around $10 000 worth of upgrades to the grounds.

The start box is being constructed by Giddy Up Fencing alongside the trade village in the main competition area providing prime viewing for spectators at the Celebratory luncheon in the Adina Vineyard Café.

To celebrate the ten year anniversary of the Sydney Olympics the Tyre Feed Bins Australia Preliminary class will return to the long format competition including roads, tracks and steeplechase. Event Sport Director Vince Roach, who was one of those involved in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, is excited about the chance to use some of the forgotten parts of the fantastic venue, one of the few Olympic Equestrian facilities still in use around the world.

Cross country day is always filled with thrills and spills making it an exciting day for the whole family to come and watch. Picnic spots on course or fine dining in the café will keep everyone happy.

Three Weeks To Go! Sydney 2000 Gold Medal Winning Mount To Make A Guest Appearance!

stuart20and20jeepster

Winning Mount to Make a Guest Appearance at Sydney International Three Day Event 26-29 August 2010!

Jeepster, a New Zealand Thoroughbred foaled in 1987, began his career as a racehorse named Delphic Oracle. He had 22 starts, mostly at the Illawarra and Hawksbury races with reasonable success, his winnings totalling over $17,000. Retired from racing at 5 years old, he was bought for Event rider Stuart Tinney in 1993 by Michael Pribula.

As is often the case with ex-racehorses, Jeepster’s early antics in dressage were interesting, however he showed a unique ability for eventing so the Tinney’s persevered with him.  This commitment paid off and Jeepster was selected with Stuart on the Australian team for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Teamed with Darien Powers (Andrew Hoy), Kibah Sandstone (Matt Ryan) and House Doctor (Phillip Dutton), Jeepster won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He executed an accurate dressage test, a faultless cross country round and had just one rail and a time penalty in the show jumping phase. Huge crowds at the Sydney Olympics will remember the victory lap with all four combinations after the thrilling final jumping phase at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, one of the few Olympic Equestrian venues still in use around the world.

Jeepster was named NSW Eventing horse of the year in 2000 and in 2003 he earned the right to represent Australia again in Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games.

While Jeepster is now retired and enjoying his time in the paddock watching over the young horses at the Tinney’s property in Maraylya, Stuart is aiming for selection on yet another Australian team this time heading for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky USA. Stuart is high on the selectors list with consistent performances on both his leading horses Vettori and Panamera. Vettori won the Adelaide CCI4* in 2009 and Panamera was 2nd at the recent Melbourne CCI3*. Stuart will be competing in the final selection event at the Sydney International Three Day Event from 26 - 29 August this year.

As part of the ten year anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Olympic Games the Tinney’s will be bringing Jeepster out of retirement to make a guest appearance at the Sydney International Three Day Event to be held at the Olympic venue at Horsley Park. The legendary horse will meet the crowds on Saturday and will be part of the presentations on Sunday.

A Showcase of Dressage at the Sydney Three Day Event

Press Release – Monday, 26 July 2010

With the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) looming the final selection for Australian based riders in all eight WEG disciplines is being completed. The Sydney International Three Day Event is proud to be hosting a showcase of the sports, ensuring Australia’s elite equestrian athletes will all be at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre ten years after the Sydney 2000 Olympic games was held there.

A showcase of Grand Prix Dressage will be combined with Para Equestrian Dressage and the Eventing CCI4* Dressage on Friday 27 August for a full day of viewing pleasure for the dressage enthusiast. With free entry to the event on the dressage days this is an extremely rare opportunity to watch the elegance and beauty of equestrian sport.

The Australian based WEG contenders for Grand Prix Dressage are Rozzie Ryan and Rachael Sanna. Four other elite dressage combinations will also be invited to compete alongside these talented women in the main arena on Friday.

Rachael Sanna (Glossodia, NSW) competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, finishing sixth in the Dressage Teams event. She also competed at the 2002 and 2006 World Equestrian Games and at the 1999 World Cup Final in Germany. Rachael is married to one of Australia’s leading show jumpers, George, and is currently campaigning the talented stallion Jaybee Alabaster.

Rozzie Ryan (Heatherbrae, NSW) first represented Australia at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm in 1990. Rozzie is married to one of Australia’s leading riders in both dressage and eventing, Heath and is currently campaigning the powerful stallion Jive Magic. Heath won the 2008 Sydney Three Day Event on Mystery Whisper (pictured) and will also be competing in the 2010 Sydney three day event.

The CCI4* Eventing contenders include Sydney 2000 Gold medallist Stuart Tinney, three silver medallists from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Megan Jones, Sonja Johnson and Shane Rose and the up and coming Chris Burton who is yet to represent Australia but his rising form is placing him directly in the selectors sights.

Eventing Explained

The Olympic sport of Eventing (also known as Horse Trials) is the equestrian triathlon where the three phases of dressage, cross country and show jumping are completed by the same horse/rider combination. This is a true test of fitness and horse management. Eventing is the equestrian discipline at which Australia has excelled with numerous Olympic Medals including gold ten years ago at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It is also one of the few sports where men and women compete on equal terms and the genuine amateur can compete against an Olympic Champion.

·         Dressage is the first test which comprises a set sequence of compulsory movements in an arena 20m wide and 60m long. At the highest level the test is judged by three international judges who are looking for balance, rhythm, suppleness and most importantly, obedience of the horse and its’ harmony with the rider.

·         Cross Country consists of the challenge of more than 35 natural obstacles over approximately 4km that has to be jumped inside an optimum time. This phase is filled with thrills and spills.

·         Show Jumping is the final phase of the competition consisting of one round of jumping with a maximum time allowed. The objective is to jump all the fences clear inside the time.

Burton Beats the Best in the Sydney HSBC World Cup Eventing Qualifier

Heath Ryan and Mystery Whisper led the field after dressage in the HSBC FEI World Cup EventingTM Qualifier with a score of 39.40 penalties, just .60 penalties ahead of 2009 champions Megan Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester. Ryan was unable to compete at the World Cup in 2009 after suffering a stroke at a One Day Event prior to the inaugural qualifier. His 2010 dressage test scored 73.25% proving that he was well and truly back to form.

Marcia Williamson on the ex-racehorse Kalason was first out on the Cross country course designed by Wayne Copping. Willimason was in 16th place after dressage with a score of 56.70. Kalason jumped a clear round with 18.4 time penalties, showing the rest of the field the course was jumpable. The next rider out on course, Shane Rose, showed why he was the fastest cross country rider in the world at the 2008 Olympics, bringing the young Taurus home clear and within time to remain on his dressage score of 55 penalties. Rose had four rides in the class but withdrew his highest placed horse, APH Moritz before cross country because he didn’t feel the horse was quite right for the big track and wasn’t prepared to risk him. One of his other rides, Koko Black was also clear cross country. Though there were few problems negotiating the fences, just four riders managed to record a clear round within the time.

Megan Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester won both the New Zealand and Sydney 2009 HSBC Qualifiers but were unable to attend the final in Poland due to quarantine restrictions. With the new ranking system in place for 2010 Jones could claim a share of the US$180 000 prize money on offer. This combination won the 2010 New Zealand qualifier held over Easter and Jones was determined to repeat her victory in Sydney. Jester ate up the cross country course finishing clear with 4 time penalties putting pressure on Ryan to come out with the accelerator on.

Sydney 2000 Gold medallist Stuart Tinney, sitting in 9th place after dressage executed an almost perfect round on the big grey Vettori adding just 0.8 to his dressage score of 49.40.

Ryan and Mystery Whisper looked fantastic out on course but time again proved to be an issue. In a post ride interview with Eventing legend Fiona Hughes Ryan blamed age as the reason for his 14 time penalties. Despite being slow Ryan was thrilled with Mystery Whisper calling him the best cross country horse in Australia

Three riders including Chris Burton and Holstein Park Leilani were held on course whilst the ground crew made repairs to a later fence. This combination was stopped in zone 2 just before the HSBC brushes where they had a problem in 2009. A focused Burton was restarted after a ten minute hold up and Leilani made no mistakes through the difficult line of brushes, finishing clear within the time adding nothing to their dressage score of 46.50.

Out of the twenty eight riders who started the HSBC FEI World Cup EventingTM cross country course, twenty one combinations completed their round. Only one rider, Kevin McNab from Queensland fell. The final standings going into the show jumping had Megan Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester in first place with no room for error. Chris Burton and Holstein Park Leilani were just 2.5 penalties off the leader with a buffer of one rail to Stuart Tinney and Vettori.

Day three of competition began at 8am with show jumping in three arenas at the Sydney Olympic venue. Cassie Lowe and Bentleigh Gambler were the first World Cup Eventing combination into the arena. The combination completed a perfect round in front of an impressive crowd. The next competitors knocked a number of rails until Emily Anker and Keniski recorded the second clear round moving them up the placings to finish in 15th out of 31 starters.

The original leader after dressage, Heath Ryan, had moved into 7th place with a slow cross country round on Mystery Whisper. A stop at the big combination added four jumping penalties and 6 time penalties to their score moving them into 9th place overall. Clarke Johnstone from New Zealand was the third clear round on the course moving them up from 6th place.

Chris Burton remained cool and focused as he entered the indoor arena on Holstein Park Leilani at the Sydney International Equestian Centre this afternoon lfor the final phase of the HSBC Eventing World Cup. Less than a rail separated Chris from the leader Megan Jones. Despite knowing Megan’s faultless ability to jump clear under pressure, Chris was able to pilot Jean Findlay’s chestnut mare around the John Vallance track without penalty giving Megan no room for error. An unusual late rail for Jester brought a loud cheer from the crowd as they realised the local favourite had moved into first place. Clarke Johnstone from New Zealand was third on Orient Express and Sonja Johnson was fourth and fifth on Ringwould Jaguar and Parkiarrup Illicit Liasion. Full results on The Sydney Eventing Website.

Clarke Johnstone on Kolaora Stud Secrets convincingly won the Brighton Saddlewordl CIC 2* at Sydney’s Weekend of World Cups with a score of 50.80. Followed by Tim Boland on Untouchable and Shane Rose on Sharmayne Spencer’s Star Am I. All three riders show jumped clear to finish in their cross country positions where time was an influencing factor with Clarke Johnstone the fastest over the course.

The Equestrian NSW CIC 1* was won by Judith Clarke and Diablito with a double clear round of show jumping and cross country ahead of Emma Dougall and Belcam Bear. Katie Abbot at Three Cheers was crowned the Oaks Gates Rising Star as the highest placed rider who had not competed at 1* level prior to 2010.

The three Preliminary Classes were won by Emma Armstrong on Hass, Emma Mason on Poker Face and Sam Lyle on Grandious. The winner of the 6 year old Young Event Horse class Oaks Cordelia completed her first ever event in 15th place, a credible effort for a purpose bred horse..

The show jumping classes were equally as exciting. Jamie Kermond repeated his performance from the Copabella Classic Grand Prix where he won the Grand Prix on Valhlla III. Kermond was the only rider to go double clear, this time on his second horse Clothago.

The organising committee is grateful for the support sponsors and volunteers provide towards the event. Over 200 volunteers worked to provide the draws, keep the rings moving through, the parking organised and the results updating live.

Chris Chugg and Vivant Take out Sydney World Cup Qualifier

Chris Chugg and the handsome stallion Vivant have taken out the 2009 ISS World Cup Qualifier at Sydney on Sunday 13 December. They won convincingly, being the only pair to have two clear rounds over the big and testing Leopoldo Palacios tracks.

Chris showed his domination of the sport in Australia by also taking out second place with ABS Conquistador – the pair went clear in the first round and had two rails in the second.

Third place went to Paul Athanasoff and the charismatic Wirregulla Nicklaus, with a rail in both rounds.

The event concluded the 2009 World Cup qualifying rounds in Australia, with Chris Chugg a clear winner. Chris will travel to Geneva for the World Cup final, which will be held in April 2010.

We wish Chris all the best of luck for Geneva.
