Edwina Places Third in GCT of Rio De Janeiro

There was a lot riding on the last day of the GCT. The Million Euro Bonus, the Grand Prix of Brazil and the Leading Rider Award, which itself was worth over 25′000Euro to the winner.

The first round produced 11 clear rounds but to the amazement of many Marco Kutscher, leader of the GCT rankings was not among them when he had two down with Catoki. And Jos Lansink’s chance of snatching the winners part of the Bonus disappeared when Spender S had two fences down. But Marcus Ehning was in the eighteen second round contestants and so was Edwina Alexander, lying in fourth but ready to capitalise on anyone else’s misfortunes.

In the second round Ellen Whitaker was the first to go double clear with Equimax Ocalado and she was soon joined by six others. Ellen hit the third fence and Phillip Westhaupt and Souvenir 29, the last. Denis Lynch and All Inclusive were the first to jump three clear rounds and he made a very good job of setting a fast time on All Inclusive NRW, stopping the clock at 33.50.

Edwina Alexander took a stride out between the third and fourth fences and nearly paid the price but Cevo Itot du Chateau put in an enormous leap to clear the back rail only for the clock to deny him a better placing than Denis.

Ben Maher was slower on Oscar although clear but the person who made the biggest effort to win was Brazil’s Carlos Ribas. Riding Ronaldo who he had only been riding for a client for a few weeks, he absolutely tore round to screams and whistles from the capacity crowd but 34.33 was only good enough for eventual fourth.

Last in was Marcus Ehning. Already the winner of the leading rider prize when previous leader Christian Ahlmann had a rail in the second round on Taloubet Z, winning here would hand the German not only the Grand Prix but also the Championship. Finishing fourth would leave that in the hands of Marco Kutscher. And the margin for error was small. A second and a half split the riders currently leading the competition. But Marcus Ehning is not a three times World Cup winner for nothing. Making good use of Noltes Kuchen Girl’s huge stride, he did not appear to be hurrying as much as Dennis but a final gallop to the last sealed the win and that jump off ride earned him 430′000 Euro in total prize money. More than anyone else has earned in any show jumping competition in the history of the sport.

Quotes

Marcus Ehning- “I was lucky to be last to go and I knew I had a fast horse who could catch Denis but I still cannot believe all this has happened. The show title, the Grand Prix and the Champion title, it is amazing. I had to take all the risks in the jump off and tonight it paid off, I was lucky it all worked. I am just a bit happy!”

Edwina Alexander-”It has been an amazing year so far and I can’t believe anyone could win as much money as Marcus, he was unbelievable tonight. This is Itot’s last show before WEG, he gets a short holiday now. Which he deserves as I decided with Jan (Tops) that I could do that related distance on four strides but when I got there it was a little bit further than I thought!”

Jan Tops- “You do not see many events like this one. For so much to ride on the last second of a jump off. I cannot imagine having a better day than this one. And as for next year at this moment, I do not know how we will improve on this.”

Edwina Places Again in the Global Champions Tour

Edwina Alexander and Cevo Itot du Chateau have again placed in the Global Champions Tour, with a third placing in the grand prix in Chantilly.

Only five riders made it through to the jump off.  The first, Penelope Leprevost (FRA), set what would be the time to beat with a fast turn to the second last fence, with her mount My Lord Cathargo. Edwina was next to go with her more compact horse, and while the pair also went clear, they were unable to beat Penelope’s time. Ludger Beerbaum (GER) incredibly managed to get the fastest time so far, even with a slip on that time saving turn, but had the last one down.

Laura Kraut and little Cedric (USA) were next to go, going clear and beating Penelope’s time.

That only left Nick Skelton (GBR) and Carlo, who while fast, had a rail down, giving victory to the American pair.

So the event ended with an all female finish – Laura Kraut in 1st, Penelope Leprevost in 2nd and Edwina Alexander in 3rd.

Edwina Alexander wins the GCT Grand Prix at Valkensward

Australia’s Edwina Alexander and Isovlas Itot du Chateau have won the Grand Prix of the Valkensward leg of the Global Champions Tour.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Shutterfly were no doubted the favourites to take out the event, and in the jump off, Shutterfly jumped like the legend he is and despite several mistakes later admitted by Meredith, finishing in 35.81 seconds, which all the remaining riders knew would take some doing to beat.

France’s Michel Robert nearly caught Meredith, but had to make an adjustment to the last fence which probably cost him the half second he failed by. However, his time of 35.95 seconds was going to be good enough for third.

That left two to go. Edwina, set off as if the hounds of hell were after her and Itot, who could barely see over some of the fences, looked as eager as she to win. It was probably the handbrake turn into the fourth fence that won the day although the other turn at six was equally audacious. They finished four tenths of a second faster than Meredith and Shutterfly!

The crowd were overjoyed, because as a Dutch resident, Edwina was probably the next best thing to one of their own winning. But there was still the small matter of the Olympic champions, Eric Lamaze and Hickstead. However, Hickstead was just not quite able to turn as quickly as his rivals on the grass surface and finished on 36.43, in fourth place.

Edwina is the leader of the GCT rankings - the top 25 riders have qualified for the GCT Final Doha.

Edwina Alexander continues to perform on Day 4 of the Brazillian leg of the Global Champions Tour

The 1.45 jump off class, the Coca Cola Challenge, caused a fair bit of trouble and from 49 starters there were only five clears: Gianni Govoni and Love Affair, Marco Kutsher and Cash, Ludo Phillipaerts with Tauber van Het Kapelhof and Harry Smolders with Exquis Powerfee and Cassio Rivetti and Magic Bengsston.

Gianni was lining up for winning his third GCT class at the show – a feat never accomplished  before and his wife had instructed him not to go too fast as even fifth would have clinched the coveted leading rider prize. But safe clears are not usually an option for this man and to the screaming delight of the audience, Gianni let rip. Love Affair, showing no effect from her exertion the previous night, did a handbrake turn into the third and took a stride out to the fifth to win the class by three seconds from Ludo. Marco Kutsher was close for third.

The Embral Masters, with 95,000 Euro prizemoney for the winner was run as a ‘winning round’ contest in which the best 25% go through to the jump off from 40 starters.

Only four of the 10 to go through were completely clear in the first round. The Grand Prix winner Joyau D’Opal took violent exception to the water tray fence and was eliminated for two refusals.

Following his four faults in the first round, Eric Lamaze and Hickstead produced a clear on 37.26, which was way faster than anyone else and this propelled them into the lead with four to go. Prince Abdullah al Saud showed his good round in Monaco was no fluke when Mobily Allah Jabek was the first double clear. Then Edwina Alexander and Itot du Chateau tapped out the fourth fence but she was very fast and only dropped one place to third. That meant Steve Guerdat and Tresor knew that a steady clear would probably be good enough as his greater experience meant he could ride a tighter line than the Prince without pushing his horse too fast.  He ended up winning by one second.

The Global Champions Tour moves to its home town of Valkenswaard, Holland in two weeks for the eight and last leg on the Road to Doha.

Edwina Alexander is still second in the GCT rankings.

Edwina Alexander places ninth on Day 3 of the Global Champions Tour of Brazil

The Brazilian leg of the Global Champions Tour finally got underway on Day 3, after two days of rain.

In the Grand Prix class, the 95,000 Euro first prize went to the newly dubbed master of faster Gianna Govoni (ITA) and Joyau D’Opal. Second went to Olympic Gold medallists Eric Lamaze (CAN) and Hickstead, and third to Marco Kutscher (GER) and Coronet Obolensky.

Australia’s Edwina Alexander and Itot de Chateau placed ninth in the Grand Prix. Edwina also placed fourth in the 1.40m class with Isovlas Late Night.

Edwina has now moved up to second place in the Global Champions Tour. Patrick McEntee is still leading the rankings and Meredith Michaels Beerbaum is still third.

Global Champions Tour 2009 – Monte Carlo – Day 3

The 1.50m jump off class of Grand Prix day had 12 going through to the jump off over a twisty course. Marcus Ehning and For German RD set the standard high with a clear in 34.75 but he only held the lead for a few seconds. Last night’s winner, Harry Smoulders, belted around on Exquis Powerfee in 33.88 seconds. Despite a typical hell for leather ride, Italy’s Gianni Govonni was slower in 34 seconds.
Harry finished first and now has the distinction of being the first rider on the 2009 Tour to win two classes at the same show. Gianni finished second and Marcus third.
Harry was also clear in the first round of the Grand Prix which produced nine completely clean sheets, five with one time penalty and four fast four faulters. The first round had caused trouble all over it but a flimsy ornamental gate at 6 and a double towards the collecting ring at three were probably the worst culprits for thinning the field down.

In the second, the course was more or less reversed. Fence 2, an oxer off a turn was by far the fence most responsible for stopping people reaching the jump off and it took a Grand Prix rookie horse to leave everything up - Jessica Kurten’s Castle Forbes Myrtille Poulais. Carrying one time fault, Jessica was the first to go completely clear in this round. It was looking as if one penalty would be good enough to win until the last five riders in produced four more clean sheets and a third timed jump off was on.
The jump off saw Alvardo Miranda and Rodrigo Pessoa representing Brazil, Richard Spooner for the USA and John Whitaker for Great Britain. Richard Spooner, the ‘master of faster’, did seem to have left a little bit of room for the others when Cristallo stopped the clock at 35.46. But Rodrigo’s Lets Fly who had beaten Richard in the Grand Prix of Rome could not repeat the feat here – over a second slower. Last to go was John Whitaker on the giant Irish bred Casino. The pair did beat the time but had the last fence down, leaving Richard Spooner successful defender of the title he won last year. The second and third places were taken out by the Brazilians – Alvardo then Rodrigo.
The Global Champions Tour now moves to Estoril, Portuagal for the sixth leg on the road to Doha. The GCT rankings are now headed by Patrick McEntee of Belgium.

Global Champions Tour 2009 - Monte Carlo - Day 2

The 1.45 metre jump off class on the second day started with a rare torrential downpour, accompanied with thunder and lightning. The heavens opened just as John Whitaker was about to open proceedings on Casino but it only lasted 15 minutes or so. John had one fence down and it took another ten riders before Julian Epaillard and grey stallion Commissario managed to leave all of them up. In the end, only seven made it through to the jump off, including last night’s winner Gianni Govoni.

But on this occasion, Gianni’s mount Love Affair made one of her rare mistakes at the first fence, which put paid to their chances but another mare, Wizzy, partnered by Brazil’s Bernardo Alves, who set a blistering time of 33.27 to claim the event. Britain’s Ben Maher has had a few issues with his relatively new ride Wonderboy. A much bigger horse to turn, he only failed by half a second to catch Wizzy. The Netherland’s Henk Van de Pol was also clear and fast but not quite fast enough finishing in third place on 34.66. USA’s Richard Spooner was the only other person to jump clear twice to claim fourth with Pako.

In the second event of the day, 11 of the 35 starters made it through to the jump off over a course appeared to jump somewhat easier than in the previous classes. Rodrigo Pessoa and Lets Fly, Grand Prix winners in Rome and Charlotte recently, had a great round finishing clear in 34.72. However, Harry Smolders and Exquis Powerfee, an almost black stallion, never lost his balance for a moment as his rider expertly cut corners, taking two whole seconds off Rodrigo’s time to win the event. Dutchman Peter Geerink almost robbed his countryman of first prize, with his consistent mount, Scotch. Rodrigo finished close behind the two Dutch riders and Marco Kutscher, back on the Tour after dislocating his shoulder in Hamburg, showed placed fourth.
