Review of 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Dressage and Showjumping Finals from the Sidelines

Interview with Liz Whiteway from Naremburn NSW, who was lucky enough to be in Las Vegas to watch the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Dressage and Showjumping finals - by Anoushka de Silva

So Liz, could you describe the atmosphere at the Thomas & Mack Centre? What was it like watching the event live?

The event was simply spectacular. Brilliant facilities, and like any show in Las Vegas, it ran like clockwork. I felt like I could literally reach out and touch the action, that’s how close you can get. The crowd interaction was great. Commentators were well informed and entertaining, and live action was supported by real time scores and video replays. The real surprise was the music, which didn’t seem to faze the horses. What else can I say? Only in the US……..

Who did you rub shoulders with?

Meredith Michaels’ family – literally – during the showjumping sessions! I was seated next to her brother Greg, Mum and Dad. So you could say I was right amongst it.

Who were your favourites to watch in the dressage and jumping and why?

In the jumping, I just love Oki Doki, ridden by Albert Zoer. He’s such a little dynamo and so brave. Nothing seems to faze him, and his character just shines through.

In the dressage, Hans Peter Minderhoud on Exquis Nadine was a standout for me. They were so elegant, fine and effortless and displayed a real flair without being overly exaggerated. It was a beautifully balanced performance. To be honest, it felt like the judges were biased towards the top riders before they even started. And given the scores are displayed real time on each movement during the test, there was quite some discussion about the range of scores across individual judges.

What was your favourite moment?

Finding my seat on the first day and realising I’d hit the jackpot. I also loved watching the showjumping participants walk the course. It was fascinating. Good to see we all get a little nervous!

After watching the initial rounds, did you think that Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Steffen Peters would take out the 2009 World Cup titles?

It was clear from the outset that Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum would be hard to beat. But then it was very, very close and there were some real contenders.

I thought Steffen’s first test was a well deserved win, but to take out the final….. but then, who am I to judge!

Do you think Las Vegas is a good venue for this event?

The best. Vegas knows how to put on a great show. Everything just works. The range of options are mind blowing – but then I’m a fan. It’s Disneyland for adults.

Would go back to watch another world cup final?

I’ve joined World Cup Club, so I get first release tickets for 2011. Next time I’ll probably just go to the jumping so I get more time poolside to work on the tan and down a few more mohitos!

Second place went to McLain Ward (USA) with Sapphire and third to Albert Zoer (NED) and Oki Doki.

Following their win in Day 1’s Grand Prix, America’s Steffen Peters and Ravel have taken out the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup dressage title.

Peters and Ravel produced an impressive freestyle test, seemingly unaffected by the crowd going wild with excitement, which scored 84.95%. Peters edged out Isabell Werth (GER) and Satchmo on 84.5%, with Anky van Grunsven (NED) and IPS Painted Black placing third on 82.150%.

FEI World Cup Finals Update - Showjumping Round 2

Filed under: Australian showjumping — Tags: — anoushka @ 8:37 pm

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (GER) and Shutterfly  have continued to dominate the FEI World Cup finals series in Las Vegas by also winning Round 1. Meredith and Shutterfly galloped to the last to claim a one-second victory from McLain Ward (USA) and Sapphire, with Albert Zoer (NED) and Oki Doki taking out third place.

Australia’s Edwina Alexander and Itot du Chateau placed 14th with four faults. Unfortunately, Harley Brown and Cassiato were eliminated.

So after two of the three finals rounds, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum is in first, followed by McLain Ward and Albert Zoer . Edwina Alexander is ranked 23rd and Harley Brown 40th.

The next showjumping competition will be Saturday’s Grand Prix, however this is not part of the finals series. Australia’s Lane Clarke with Kiss the Sky and Harley Brown with Cassiato will be competing for the $75,000 in prize money.

FEI World Cup Finals Update 15 April 2009 - Australian Participants and Television / Online Coverage

The FEI World Cup finals in Las Vegas commence today!

46 riders have confirmed that they will be participating in the show jumping final. The exciting line up includes: Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Rodrigo Pessoa, Ludger Beerbaum, Gerco Schroeder, Michael Whitaker, Marcus Ehning, McLain Ward, Beezie Madden and Ian Millar.

In addition to Edwina Alexander, Australia will also be represented by US-based rider Harley Brown, who recently placed 7th in the Orange County Register World Cup Qualifier with his mount, Cassiato. It is understood that Alexander will be competing on Isovlas Late Night 16.

Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi will be representing Australia in the Dressage Final, which will involve a strong field of 15 competitors, including Anky van Grunsven, Isabella Werth, Monica Theodorescu, Jan Brink and Steffen Peters. Anky van Grunsven will not be competing with her Olympic gold medallist IPS Salinero, as she did not compete him at two World Cup qualifiers as required. Instead, she will be competing with IPS Painted Black.

Live broadcasts will be available on the FEI.TV website at www.feitv.premiumtv.co.uk (however the site currently appears to be experiencing technical problems).

Highlights of the dressage will also be available on Dressage Training Online at www.dressagetrainingonline.com, including the entire Friday schedule of World Cup events. Friday’s events will be available shortly after the World Cup.

The first viewing of the FEI World Cup Show Jumping Final on Foxtel will be on Tuesday 21 April 2009 at 4am on Fox Sports 2.
