Heath Ryan and Mystery Whisper have taken out the three star class of this year’s Sydney Three Day event at SIEC.
The pair had led after the dressage and cross country phases. However, the showjumping phase proved to be a nail biter as there were no clear rounds and Heath, who had two rails up his sleeve coming in as the last competitor, had two rails down, including the first!
Thankfully, Heath had no time penalties, so he secured a narrow win (0.5 penalties) over New Zealand’s John Twomey and Flaunt it. Megan Jones and Kirby Park Allofasudden managed to move up the rankings as rails fell in the class, and her four penalties-round secured third place.
The crowd was later wowed by the competitors in the compulsory CCI four star “confirmation of fitness” class for our WEG team, including the likes of Stuart Tinney, Megan Jones and Chris Burton, who made the four star showjumping course look very easy. As this class was a test of fitness, there was no official scoring.
Well done to Heath and best of luck to our WEG team hopefuls. The team will be more formalised in the next few days.
In other eventing news, Megan Jones finished second in the final standings of the HSBC FEI World Cup Eventing, earning her US$34,000. Michael Jung from Germany was the overall winner and former Aussie, Phillip Dutton placed third.
Congratulations to Megan on an outstanding result!
Come to the Sydney International Three Day Event 26-29 August 2010
Ten years ago Sydney hosted the Olympic Games and the Sydney International Equestrian Centre was created. The Australian Eventing team won gold in front of massive crowds at the Sydney Games, our fourth gold in the same event over the history of the Olympics. Since then Australia has added a Silver to their total of seven Olympic equestrian medals.
Despite being one of the best Eventing nations in the world Australian events struggle to attract serious sponsorship and media coverage. Events such as the Sydney International Three Day run on a shoestring budget and rely heavily on volunteers dedicated to providing world class competitions for Australian riders aiming to qualify for International events.
In an attempt to raise the profile of the sport in the eyes of the Australian public the Sydney International Eventing Committee, supported by Equestrian Australia and Equestrian NSW, funded the production of both the 2009 events for screening on television. Aired by Fox Sports these highlight packages attracted large audiences from around Australia. Despite this interest in Equestrian sport with the Australian public and an increase in Australian successes in other equestrian disciplines sponsorship and media support of national and international equestrian events is still disappointing and organisers have not been able to continue with the TV production for this year’s event.
Running two major events per year is stretching the Sydney volunteer committee to their limit but they are determined to ensure the future of this amazing sport in NSW. It is exciting to watch and demonstrates the amazing bond that can be developed between horse and rider. Age is no barrier and men and women compete on an equal footing, one of the few sports where this is possible.
Horse enthusiasts are encouraged to come to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre this week to relive the thrill of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. By attending the event spectators will be showing their support and may help to attract media coverage and a major sponsor for 2011.
In just eight days time Chris Burton from Wilburforce, NSW will attempt to repeat his performance from the 2010 Sydney round of the HSBC World Cup where he snatched victory from Megan Jones on the stunning chestnut mare HP Leilani. Despite being one of the country’s most decorated riders Chris has not yet represented Australia in a World Equestrian Games or an Olympics. His recent form is hard for selectors to ignore and they will be watching him closely during the test of fitness class at the Sydney Three Day Event being held from 26 -29 August.
HP Leilani is owned by Jade Findaly. Originally from Mosman Jade was given the ride on Leilani about 6 years ago. When she realised this was a special horse Jade and her mother Jean bought the horse. Jade rode, trained and competed Leilani until the Sydney 3DE in September 2008 when she was 19 weeks pregnant with her first child Piper and knew she had to give up riding until after the birth.
Chris and Jade had been friends and riding together since they both started competing in Sydney at about the time of the 2000 Olympics. They developed a great respect for each other and when Chris had misfortune with his horse Newsprint, Jade wanted to give him the ride on her beautiful mare that was just ready to hit the big time. She respected his riding ability and he respected her knowledge and training of Leilani. Chris has gone on to take Leilani to the top with guidance and cooperation from Jade all the way and they hope she will be selected to travel to Kentucky with the Australian Eventing team this September.
Jade’s mother Jean, who still lives in Mosman has offered support and helps finance the expensive and challenging endeavour. “Preparing a horse for world class competition is a long process. My pleasure is derived from seeing a beautiful creature reach her potential and enjoying watching the riders create such a beautiful spectacle. I have encouraged Jade to follow her dream by supporting her chosen career.”
Jade was brought up in Mosman as a typical city girl however she always had a love of animals and especially horses. She now has a lovely farm at Cattai near the Hawkesbury River. The farm has a charming 1806 cottage in which she and her husband Paul Trickett run their businesses. Paul runs Willow Landscapes, Jade runs Findlay Equestrian and together they run Tyre Feed Bins Australia. Their farm is Heritage listed and they try to maintain their businesses sympathetically to its origins.
As well as watching the talented Leilani compete in the WEG test event with Chris, Jade will be competing three horses at the event. Frontier Psychiatrist is entered in the Tarraleah Park CCI2*, Bloomers Twinkletoes is in the Harbour IT CCI1* and the divine Oaks Sporthorse mare Cordellia is entered in the Gwaihir Stud Young Event Horse Class.
In just nine days time the best riders from around Australia will compete on the world renowned Sydney 2000 Olympic course at the Sydney International Three Day Event. Nearly 200 riders will participate over four days of competition. Saturday is cross country day and the course is looking as good as it did ten years ago when the Australian Eventing Team won Olympic gold in front of huge crowds.
International cross country course designer Ewan Kellet arrived on site at the beginning of August and has been working non stop to complete the upgrades to the Sydney track with only a fleeting visit home to Victoria to visit his wife and baby. The 2010 course includes a number of new portable jumps and sponsor fences.
Landscaping company Green Options has provided the decorative colour for the course and the Sydney International Equestrian Centre contributed to the event with around $10 000 worth of upgrades to the grounds.
The start box is being constructed by Giddy Up Fencing alongside the trade village in the main competition area providing prime viewing for spectators at the Celebratory luncheon in the Adina Vineyard Café.
To celebrate the ten year anniversary of the Sydney Olympics the Tyre Feed Bins Australia Preliminary class will return to the long format competition including roads, tracks and steeplechase. Event Sport Director Vince Roach, who was one of those involved in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, is excited about the chance to use some of the forgotten parts of the fantastic venue, one of the few Olympic Equestrian facilities still in use around the world.
Cross country day is always filled with thrills and spills making it an exciting day for the whole family to come and watch. Picnic spots on course or fine dining in the café will keep everyone happy.
Winning Mount to Make a Guest Appearance at Sydney International Three Day Event 26-29 August 2010!
Jeepster, a New Zealand Thoroughbred foaled in 1987, began his career as a racehorse named Delphic Oracle. He had 22 starts, mostly at the Illawarra and Hawksbury races with reasonable success, his winnings totalling over $17,000. Retired from racing at 5 years old, he was bought for Event rider Stuart Tinney in 1993 by Michael Pribula.
As is often the case with ex-racehorses, Jeepster’s early antics in dressage were interesting, however he showed a unique ability for eventing so the Tinney’s persevered with him. This commitment paid off and Jeepster was selected with Stuart on the Australian team for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Teamed with Darien Powers (Andrew Hoy), Kibah Sandstone (Matt Ryan) and House Doctor (Phillip Dutton), Jeepster won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He executed an accurate dressage test, a faultless cross country round and had just one rail and a time penalty in the show jumping phase. Huge crowds at the Sydney Olympics will remember the victory lap with all four combinations after the thrilling final jumping phase at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, one of the few Olympic Equestrian venues still in use around the world.
Jeepster was named NSW Eventing horse of the year in 2000 and in 2003 he earned the right to represent Australia again in Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games.
While Jeepster is now retired and enjoying his time in the paddock watching over the young horses at the Tinney’s property in Maraylya, Stuart is aiming for selection on yet another Australian team this time heading for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky USA. Stuart is high on the selectors list with consistent performances on both his leading horses Vettori and Panamera. Vettori won the Adelaide CCI4* in 2009 and Panamera was 2nd at the recent Melbourne CCI3*. Stuart will be competing in the final selection event at the Sydney International Three Day Event from 26 - 29 August this year.
As part of the ten year anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Olympic Games the Tinney’s will be bringing Jeepster out of retirement to make a guest appearance at the Sydney International Three Day Event to be held at the Olympic venue at Horsley Park. The legendary horse will meet the crowds on Saturday and will be part of the presentations on Sunday.

Eventing Explained
The Olympic sport of Eventing (also known as Horse Trials) is the equestrian triathlon where the three phases of dressage, cross country and show jumping are completed by the same horse/rider combination. This is a true test of fitness and horse management. Eventing is the equestrian discipline at which Australia has excelled with numerous Olympic Medals including gold ten years ago at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It is also one of the few sports where men and women compete on equal terms and the genuine amateur can compete against an Olympic Champion.
·Dressage is the first test which comprises a set sequence of compulsory movements in an arena 20m wide and 60m long. At the highest level the test is judged by three international judges who are looking for balance, rhythm, suppleness and most importantly, obedience of the horse and its’ harmony with the rider.
·Cross Country consists of the challenge of more than 35 natural obstacles over approximately 4km that has to be jumped inside an optimum time. This phase is filled with thrills and spills.
·Show Jumping is the final phase of the competition consisting of one round of jumping with a maximum time allowed. The objective is to jump all the fences clear inside the time.
Melbourne Three Day event was held on the June long weekend and was an important selection event for the World Equestrian Games later this year.
The event was taken out by the former Olympic pair of Sonja Johnson and Ringwood Jaguar. Second place went to another Olympian, Stuart Tinney, riding Panamera. Stuart had a successful weekend, also placing fourth on Vettori. Third place went to Chris Burton and Holstein Park Leilani.
William Fox-Pitt (GBR) has taken out the first leg of the HSBC FEI Classics, the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, with Cool Mountain, who was making his 4-star debut.
“He is a pleasure to train,” said Fox-Pitt. “He is very straightforward and genuine, and I have always felt there was more to come. I am absolutely thrilled with him, though – to win is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Fox-Pitt’s nearest rival, Kimberley Severson (USA) had a most unfortunate Jumping round – a total of 32 faults (24 jumping, 12 time) and plummeted to 25th, and it was the 2008 winner, and former Aussie Phillip Dutton (USA), who rose three places to second on Woodburn with a clear round.
Becky Holder (USA) retained third place on Courageous Comet with just one rail, but former Aussie Boyd Martin’s meteoric rise continued, up another four places to fourth on Neville Bardos, and Canadian Stephanie Rhodes-Bosch and Port Authority continued upwards, to eventual fifth place with a clean sheet. In addition, she won the HSBC Training Bursary for the best-placed first-time 4-star competitor.
Oliver Townend (GBR) was rushed to hospital after a fall in the cross country phase. He was discharged from hospital in the morning, but having sustained minor injuries, he could not jump his ODT Master Rose and so withdrew.
37 horses completed the competition with nineclear jumping rounds.
