A Showcase of Dressage at the Sydney Three Day Event

Press Release – Monday, 26 July 2010

With the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) looming the final selection for Australian based riders in all eight WEG disciplines is being completed. The Sydney International Three Day Event is proud to be hosting a showcase of the sports, ensuring Australia’s elite equestrian athletes will all be at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre ten years after the Sydney 2000 Olympic games was held there.

A showcase of Grand Prix Dressage will be combined with Para Equestrian Dressage and the Eventing CCI4* Dressage on Friday 27 August for a full day of viewing pleasure for the dressage enthusiast. With free entry to the event on the dressage days this is an extremely rare opportunity to watch the elegance and beauty of equestrian sport.

The Australian based WEG contenders for Grand Prix Dressage are Rozzie Ryan and Rachael Sanna. Four other elite dressage combinations will also be invited to compete alongside these talented women in the main arena on Friday.

Rachael Sanna (Glossodia, NSW) competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, finishing sixth in the Dressage Teams event. She also competed at the 2002 and 2006 World Equestrian Games and at the 1999 World Cup Final in Germany. Rachael is married to one of Australia’s leading show jumpers, George, and is currently campaigning the talented stallion Jaybee Alabaster.

Rozzie Ryan (Heatherbrae, NSW) first represented Australia at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm in 1990. Rozzie is married to one of Australia’s leading riders in both dressage and eventing, Heath and is currently campaigning the powerful stallion Jive Magic. Heath won the 2008 Sydney Three Day Event on Mystery Whisper (pictured) and will also be competing in the 2010 Sydney three day event.

The CCI4* Eventing contenders include Sydney 2000 Gold medallist Stuart Tinney, three silver medallists from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Megan Jones, Sonja Johnson and Shane Rose and the up and coming Chris Burton who is yet to represent Australia but his rising form is placing him directly in the selectors sights.

Eventing Explained

The Olympic sport of Eventing (also known as Horse Trials) is the equestrian triathlon where the three phases of dressage, cross country and show jumping are completed by the same horse/rider combination. This is a true test of fitness and horse management. Eventing is the equestrian discipline at which Australia has excelled with numerous Olympic Medals including gold ten years ago at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It is also one of the few sports where men and women compete on equal terms and the genuine amateur can compete against an Olympic Champion.

·         Dressage is the first test which comprises a set sequence of compulsory movements in an arena 20m wide and 60m long. At the highest level the test is judged by three international judges who are looking for balance, rhythm, suppleness and most importantly, obedience of the horse and its’ harmony with the rider.

·         Cross Country consists of the challenge of more than 35 natural obstacles over approximately 4km that has to be jumped inside an optimum time. This phase is filled with thrills and spills.

·         Show Jumping is the final phase of the competition consisting of one round of jumping with a maximum time allowed. The objective is to jump all the fences clear inside the time.

NSW State Showjumping Championships 2010 - Gundagai

There will be no Jump Over the Mountains this year – the event has morphed into Jump over the Tuckerbox!!  Which is what Gundagai is called – and the host vehicle for the 2010 NSW State Showjumping Championships.

The dates for the event are 28 to 31 October 2010. Further details will be available on Global Entries Online once the program is finalised.

Edwena Mitchell, the event organiser, has managed to secure $15,000 in sponsorship so far, to go towards prizemoney.

I understand that this is a nice venue, with plenty of shade and space. There are about 100 small stables and open yards at the grounds and 200 portable stables have been ordered specially ordered for the event.

On the social side of things, there will be a dance on the Saturday night, with Michael Archer and his band, After Dark. Dinner and dancing will be at the next door Race Course – so no driving, just a very short wander next door!!

So put the dates in your diary. More details to come soon….

Sydney Showjumping Club Competition - Sunday 20th June 2010

A superb day of competition at Clarendon on Sunday 20th June with near record entries produces some great jumping. Coordinator Karinda Alpert said, “This has been a very successful day for the club and we are grateful for the cooperation of the competitors that helped it to run so smoothly”.

Judges were Linda Beneke, Juho Luveer and Susan Nault. Courses were designed by Mark Atkins,  who recently attended a weeklong course designer’s clinic with International expert Werner Deeg.

The Sydney Showjumping Club is now, without doubt, the biggest showjumping club in Australia with close to 400 members.  It has been in existence for nearly 60 years and has improved markedly from the time of its inception. It has been instrumental in producing the majority of elite Jumpers in this State and boasts the best facilities for competition & training in the country.

The SSJC will run a training day on Sunday 4th July and then the Winter Championships will be on the 18th July. This year’s championships are looking like being a very big event with 4 rings of competition and very generous prizes and prizemoney in all classes. Update Camden Winter Jumping Festival

The grounds at Camden are very good at the moment as this rain has been just what was needed and the scheduled watering has not been necessary.  Other areas have obviously had more rain than Camden.  Competitors would be notified by email on Thursday if this situation changed.

The majority of Riders on waiting list classes are looking promising at getting a spot in their nominated classes and will be notified on Monday.

All correspondence at this stage needs to be directed to espjane@bigpond.com.
