PREVIEW FEI WORLD CUP™ DRIVING FINAL 2011/2012 – THIS WEEKEND

FEI 31 Jan 2012

TOP CLASS LINEUP FOR FEI WORLD CUP™ DRIVING FINAL IN BORDEAUX by Cindy Timmer

Driving fans will be treated to a thrilling finale of the FEI World Cup™ Driving 11th season in Bordeaux (FRA) on 3 and 4 February.
Six drivers - Boyd Exell (AUS); IJsbrand Chardon (NED); Koos De Ronde (NED); Tomas Eriksson (SWE); Jozsef Dobrovitz (HUN) and Zoltan Lázár (HUN) – qualified for the Final at the end of an exciting season that ran over seven events held in five European countries. They will be joined by home driver Thibault Coudry, who has received the wild card.

In Bordeaux the seven drivers all start from scratch and it will not be until the very last second of the Final on the evening of Saturday 4 February that the new FEI World Cup™ Driving champion will be crowned.

British-based Australian driver Boyd Exell – triple World Cup champion and gold medallist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2010 – will be aiming for his fourth consecutive World Cup title. Exell dominated the 2011/2012 season, winning the qualifiers in Stockholm (SWE), Budapest (HUN), Geneva (SUI) and Mechelen (BEL). He participated with a wild card at the series’ opening qualifiers in Hannover and Stuttgart (GER) using these events, for which he could not earn World Cup points, to try out new horses at different positions in his team.

In Budapest, Exell was forced to use a wheeler horse in the lead and this gamble paid off and contributed to his second victory of the season. One of Exell’s new team members is the eight-year-old trotter Bajnok, previously owned by fellow four-in-hand driver Jozsef Dobrovitz (HUN). After two competitions and some good advice from the previous owner, Bajnok became a reliable member of Exell’s team. In Mechelen, Exell drove the 19-year-old gelding Bill for the first time this season. “Good old Bill” was part of the Australian’s winning team at the FEI World Cup™ Finals in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and will also be part of the set-up for Bordeaux.

IJsbrand Chardon (NED) won the opening competition in Hannover, while his compatriot Koos de Ronde had his name added to the prestigious list of winners of the German Masters Driving at Stuttgart where he won the second leg of the FEI World Cup™ Driving 2011/2012 series. Both Dutch drivers will do their utmost to put Exell under pressure. Tomas Eriksson (SWE) got his season off to an unfortunate start at the opening leg in Hannover where his horses fell. Luckily, none of the horses were injured and Eriksson used the same team throughout the rest of the series. He put on excellent performances at Mechelen and Leipzig, to finish second at both venues. In Leipzig, he received the full 10 World Cup points since the winner of that competition, IJsbrand Chardon, was competing with a wild card and was not entitled to points.

Jozsef Dobrovitz was impressive at his home event in Budapest where he finished second behind Exell. His fourth place in Stockholm and fifth places in both Hannover and Mechelen allowed him to gain enough points to qualify for the Final.

His compatriot Zoltan Lázár placed fourth four times this season. The experienced pair and four-in-hand driver secured his place at the Final at the last competition in Leipzig.

Scoring at the Final

In the Final, the starting order for Competition 1 (warm-up) on the evening of Friday 3 February in Bordeaux will be in reverse order of the final standings and Boyd Exell will therefore be the last driver into the arena. Fifty percent of the score from Competition 1 (converted into seconds) will be carried forward by the drivers into the FEI World Cup™ Driving Final (Competition 2), which takes place on the evening of Saturday 4 February. Scores from the first round of Competition 2 will be carried forward into the winning round, for which only the three best drivers will qualify to battle it out for the overall honours.

First time

The French city of Bordeaux will host the FEI World Cup™ Driving Final for the first time since the beginning of the series in 2000. Bordeaux was part of the FEI World Cup™ Driving seasons 2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Michael Freund (GER) won the first two editions at Bordeaux. Wild card driver Thibault Coudry claimed victory in 2010. In 2011 it was again a wild card driver, Ijsbrand Chardon, who won the competition. Top contender Boyd Exell has only competed in Bordeaux once: in 2003 he finished third driving a team of Welsh cobs.

Timetable and FEI TV live broadcast
Competition 1 (warm-up) – Friday, 3 February, 23.00 CET
Competition 2 (FEI World Cup™ Driving Final) – Saturday, 4 February, 23.15 CET. This competition will also be broadcast live on FEI TV, FEI’s official video platform.

EDWINA TOPS-ALEXANDER – THIRD IN ROLEX FEI WORLD CUP™ JUMPING 2011/2012 - ROUND 10, ZURICH

Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander and Cevo Itot du Chateau have placed third in the FEI World Cup jumping in Zurich. See below for the FEI press release.

29 Jan 2012

KUTSCHER AND OBOLENSKY ARE IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN AT ZURICH by Louise Parkes

Germany’s Marco Kutscher steered Cornet Obolensky to victory in the tenth qualifying leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Western European League 2011/2012 series at Zurich in Switzerland this afternoon.  The 13 year old stallion produced an exhibition of effortless jumping to outclass the rest of the 40-strong field on a tough day that saw six riders opting to retire in the opening round.

Course designer, Rolf Ludi, really piled on the pressure with a colossal track that quickly separated the best from the rest.  But one man who was unfortunate to miss a place in the seven-horse jump-off was Belgium’s Ludo Philippaerts whose 14 year old Kassini Jac left all the fences intact, only to be penalised for crossing the finish line just outside the 69-second time limit.

Kutscher’s result has rocketed him up from 13th to fourth place on the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping leaderboard going into the last two qualifying legs at Bordeaux, France next weekend and Gothenburg, Sweden two weeks later.  The series table continues to be headed by World No. 1, Rolf-Goran Bengtsson from Sweden, while runner-up spot in today’s competition has promoted Frenchman, Patrice Delaveau, to second place in the standings.

MORE INTENSE

With the Final drawing ever-closer, the battle for a starting spot in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands next April is growing more intense with every outing.  And Ludi’s course today ensured that only horses of the highest calibre would earn those precious qualifying points.  It was relentless from the outset - with even the opening vertical putting paid to the ambitions of many.  The massive white oxer at fence five, jumped off a left-hand turn, was completely demolished by the pathfinding Italian partnership of Roberto Arioldi and Lastrup who subsequently retired, and although Beat Mandli, one of 11 Swiss starters from the field of 40, produced a copybook clear when third to go, another 18 horses took their turn before Delaveau ensured a jump-off with a whirlwind tour of the track with the buzzy Ornella Mail HDC.

Two horses later, Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander and the brilliant little Cevo Itot du Chateau followed suit, and then Kutscher and his grey wonder-horse turned on the style to do likewise.  Portugal’s Luciana Diniz and Winningmood, Frenchman Simon Delestre with Napoli du Ry and Great Britain’s Ben Maher and Tripple X completed the jump-off line-up as the challenging track continued to otherwise take its toll.  The massive 2.10 metre wide triple bar at fence ten was an enormous test, as was the penultimate triple combination which proved highly influential.

COMPROMISED

With the first two elements of the latter still in place, it was the opening oxer here that compromised Mandli’s chances against the clock as he lowered that to return a time of 33.46 seconds.  Now the fourth fence on the new course, the turn after the second element here would be a deciding factor, but it was the approach that clinched it for the winning combination.

Delaveau and his flying machine Ornella Mail had already posted a super-fast round in 32.26 seconds to set the target and Tops-Alexander had followed with another clear, but a half-second slower, before Kutscher entered the ring.  “I only took six strides turning to the double and I won it there” the 36 year old German rider explained afterwards.  Cornet Obolensky has been jumping with such incredible ease throughout this indoor season, and Kutscher has been able to tap into the horse’s enormous well of scope like never before.  Fourth to go he sliced almost another half-second off Delaveau’s time in a display that demonstrated the extraordinary grace and power of the big grey for whom, it seems, no pole is too high and no distance too wide.

Diniz and Winningmood fell victim to the triple bar, but Kutscher’s lead looked set to be threatened by Delestre who scorched around the track in the quickest time of 31.19 seconds only to hit the vertical second-last, and then only Maher stood in the way of a German victory.  But the Briton and his talented home-bred Tripple X, winners on home soil at Olympia in London just before Christmas, also fell foul of the triple bar, now the second fence on the track, and had to settle for fifth place behind Simon in fourth, Tops-Alexander in third, Delaveau in runner-up spot and Kutscher at the head of affairs.

EMOTIONAL

It was an emotional moment for the winning rider.  “Two years ago my horse had a fall on the road here in Zurich and injured his foot - he was out of action for a year and when he came back to work we had to start again at zero” Kutscher explained.  On his return to indoor jumping last season the stallion didn’t show anything like his usual form - “I often wondered if he would ever come back and be the same again - but today I got my answer!” the happy rider said.

“He’s in super form again now and this is my first time to win a big Grand Prix like this with him so it’s a very special day!  Normally he’s not the fastest horse in the world, he gets a lots of chances in Grand Prix competitions but the result depends a lot on the jump-off track.  He has a slow canter but a very big jump - today the course was perfect for him and I took a lot of risk in the turns because I know he can really jump anything!  He was fantastic!” said the elated rider.

Runner-up, Patrice Delaveau, said “Marco was unbeatable today - this was clearly his weekend!”, and Edwinda Tops-Alexander agreed.

Kutscher is now planning to take Cash to Bordeaux next weekend and is undecided about whether Cornet Obolensky will go to Gothenburg for the last qualifying round at the end of next month.  “And I’m not sure if I will take him to the World Cup Final just yet - maybe I will, but my big target with him for the year is, for sure, the Olympic Games”.  If today’s form is anything to go by, one way or another Cornet Obolensky looks set for a sensational 2012.

A Clinic on the Sydney 2000 Olympic Course Contributes to its Development

jade-finlayPress Release – 25 January 2012

The Sydney International Eventing committee, all hardworking volunteers, dedicated yet another weekend of their time to organise a popular cross country clinic at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.  Over 200 riders took advantage of the unique opportunity to train their horses at the venue where Australia won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Twelve of NSW’s best Eventing coaches worked with a variety of levels, from Newcomers through to One Star riders. Groups were guided through elements such as the water, the bank and some of the more difficult lines on the lower level tracks, giving them the confidence and skills required for safe riding in both One and Three Day Events. This level of training was well received by competitors at the beginning of the 2012 Eventing season.

All proceeds from the clinic will be put towards extensive upgrades planned for the course in 2012. A number of new jumps, a new water complex and work on the footing will be completed over the next few months in time for the Sydney International Three Day Event in April. A number of sponsorship opportunities exist for businesses interested in becoming part of Australia’s Olympic legacy, with Adopt-a-Jump packages proving very popular.

“We were thrilled with the turn out at the clinic,” said Angela Shacklady, a volunteer on the SIE committee and owner of the Olympic Silver Medal winning horse All Luck ridden by Shane Rose in 2008. “It is essential that the course in Sydney continues to be one of the best in the world so that our horses and riders can continue their winning tradition at the Olympic Games. All money raised from the clinic will be used to help fund the significant course changes but sponsors are also needed to complete the upgrade.”

International Course Designer, Mike Etherington-Smith from Great Britain, who designed the original Sydney 2000 Olympic course, returned to Australia this month, thanks to support from Equestrian Australia and the High Performance Program, to begin the process of giving the famous track a new look for 2012 and beyond. Whilst in Sydney Mike also worked closely with Australian course Designer Ewan Kellett and builder Brett Ryan on plans to develop the course further, providing a wonderful opportunity for riders of all levels to compete on world class courses.

The 3* Class at the April Sydney International Three Day Event is the final qualifier for Australian and New Zealand based riders aiming for the London Olympics later this year. The event is set to be an exciting show down between a number of the short listed competitors, including Sydney 2000 Gold medallist Stuart Tinney and 2008 Silver medallist Shane Rose.

Thank you to the Eventing coaches who attended the clinic - Hamish Cargill, Annabel Armstrong, Jade Findlay (pictured), Aaron Moyes, George Sheridan, Sandy Lucas, Tallara Barwick, Judy Fasher, Sam Fasher, Fiona Hughes, Peter Gillis and Sam Lyle.

Mike-Etherington Smith to design new Sydney CCI3* in 2012

Press Release - 21 January 2012

World renowned cross-country course designer Mike Etherington-Smith (GBR) returned to his Sydney 2000 Olympic course to redesign the 3* track for the 2012 Sydney International Three Day Event, the final selection event for Australian based London Olympic contenders. The Sydney International Eventing Committee were excited to spend an afternoon with Mike discussing his vision for the new course and have released a You Tube Clip of his insights into the Sydney 3* track.

Mike Etherington-Smith, one of the world’s leading cross-country course designers, was the original course designer for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Mike ES was also responsible for the track at 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong. He was the Technical Delegate for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and Technical Advisor for the 2006 World Equestrian Games (Germany). He was responsible for the course at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and has designed the four-star track at Kentucky for the past twenty years.

” The Sydney venue is a great legacy for the sport. It has great topography and variety, is convenient and easily managed and provides plenty of opportunities for a course designer.” said Mike Etherington-Smith. “Courses at the top end are arguably more sophisticated nowadays as the standard of horse and rider continues to improve.  A good flow and balance to the course is essential, horses and riders should have the opportunity to benefit from the experience, to have a positive experience that enables them to ‘grow’, to be fair at all times to the horses whilst at the same time giving enough for the riders to have to think about.”

Whilst in Sydney Mike also worked with Australian course Designer Ewan Kellett and course builder Brett Ryan on the new CIC 1* and CIC 2* plans, providing a wonderful opportunity for riders of all levels to compete on world class courses. He stressed the importance of the footing to the SIEC team who will be undergoing work on the going in consultation with Wayne Roycroft. The future of the Sydney International course is also being considered, with further changes being discussed for the next few years that will see Sydney continue as one of the premier venues in Australia.

“It is critical that we maintain the Sydney International Equestrian Centre course as one of the best in the world to ensure our riders and horses have the opportunity to compete at a truly international level,” said Glenn Wallace President of Sydney International Eventing.

“Mike brings new ideas to the course, and will not only design the CCI3* course but provide valuable guidance and support for our local course designer Ewan Kellet and builder Brett Ryan in developing lower level courses.”

“It is vital we continuously improve the quality of our cross country courses at all levels.  To have someone of Mike’s calibre work with us at Sydney is a great opportunity for the sport in Australia. SIE would like to thank Equestrian Australia, the High Performance Program and National Eventing Director Prue Barrett for their support” concluded Mr Wallace.

The new 3* course will be spectator friendly with a number of new features being built, including an exciting new water complex in a central location. The aim is to have this new complex ready for the Sydney One Day Event in February.

Sydney International Eventing is offering the naming rights to this feature fence as an exciting sponsorship opportunity for a business wishing to be involved in an exhilarating sport where Australia has a strong tradition of Olympic success.

A first hand view of the new course will be available on the SIE website when the course is completed thanks to new technology partner CrossCountry™ App, an exciting new innovation in course walking using Google satellite map and GPS tracking.

FEI 23 Jan 2012

The 2012 Sports
Forum, which will be held in Lausanne (SUI) from 30 April to 2 May, offers a
unique opportunity to discuss issues related to the future of equestrian sport.

The Forum is
open to the National Federations and all FEI stakeholders, including members of
the media. Delegates will hear detailed presentations on proposed rule changes
for Jumping, Eventing, Endurance and Veterinary matters.

The Sports
Forum will give all stakeholders the opportunity to join the debate and have
their say on key issues, before the proposals are put to the vote at the FEI
General Assembly in November.

Registration
for the Forum opens on 6 February. The registration process closes on 15 March.
